The Pan American Gymnastics Union organizes Pan American Gymnastics Championships in different disciplines of gymnastics: men's and women's artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, as well as aerobic gymnastics. The Pan American Gymnastics Championships are considered by the International Gymnastics Federation to be the official continental championships for the Americas (comprising North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean). The entity also recognizes the South American Gymnastics Championships as the official continental championships for South America.

History
Artistic gymnastics competitions have been contested in the Americas since 1946, at the fifth edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games. In 1951, the sport was contested at the inaugural edition of the Pan American Games. With the development and growth of gymnastics around the world, rhythmic gymnastics became an Olympic event at the 1984 Summer Olympics, which, in turn, helped the sport make its debut at the 1987 Pan American Games. The following year, the concept of a championship for junior artistic gymnastics from the Americas was established (named the Junior Pan American Games), as well as a junior event for rhythmic gymnasts (named the Junior Rhythmic Pan American Championship). Both events were held in Puerto Rico. The junior tournaments paved the way for a competition for senior artistic gymnasts in 1989, named the Pan American Cup. This was the first time artistic gymnastics was competed at a single tournament -- instead of being competed at a multi-sport event -- on a continental level in the Americas.
In 1993, the first edition of the Pan American Artistic Gymnastics Championships was scheduled to take place in Venezuela, but the competition was ultimately not held. A similar competition for South American nations, the South American Gymnastics Championships, had existed since 1957. However, it was not until 1997 that the first edition of the senior Pan American Championships was officially organized in Medellín, Colombia. Two disciplines were contested: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. The tournament was supposed to be the second edition of the Pan American Cup, but eventually it was named the Pan American Championships. In 1999, the first edition of the Pan American Aerobic Gymnastics Championships was held in Mérida, Venezuela. In 2004, the Pan American Trampoline and Tumbling Championships were organized for the first time in Tampa, United States. Since 2015, Pan American Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships have also been contested.
